Spring is Here (Even if You Feel Stuck in Winter)
Here in South Africa, the world is bursting with colour. The Cape Floral Kingdom is showing off, the days are getting longer, and there’s a vibrant, undeniable energy of new life in the air. It’s Spring. It’s a season of hope, renewal, and fresh starts.
But what happens when you feel… stuck in a personal winter?
What if the world outside is blooming, but your inner landscape feels tired, depleted, and quiet? If that’s where you are right now, I want you to take a gentle breath and know that you are not alone. So many of us are moving through a period of deep exhaustion. It’s been a long, challenging year, and it’s okay if your energy doesn’t perfectly match the season.
“Nature is our greatest teacher in this.”
Nature is our greatest teacher in this. Spring doesn’t just explode overnight. It begins with quiet, unseen shifts deep within the earth. It starts with a single, brave bud pushing through cold soil. Renewal is often a gentle, tender process, not a loud announcement. Our own re-emergence can be just as quiet.
We don’t have to force ourselves to bloom just because the calendar says so. We can, however, gently borrow from nature’s wisdom. We can allow the external energy of renewal to be a soft reminder that our own spring will come, in its own perfect, divine time.
This month, my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. It was a beautiful time to reflect on the vows we made—the commitment to support each other through all of life’s seasons. It also reminded me of the vows we must make to ourselves: a commitment to honour our own inner cycles, to allow for periods of rest and wintering, and to trust in the inevitable return of our own inner spring.
This season, nature has been offering another poignant teacher right outside my door: the dandelion. So often, we label it a weed, something to be cleared away. We overlook it in favour of the more vibrant flowers. But the dandelion holds its own profound magic.
It teaches us about letting go. There is a simple joy in blowing its seeds into the wind, a small ritual of release. In the context of this year—a number 9 year of closures and completions for so many—this act feels especially powerful. It’s a chance to let go of the pressure to be anything other than what we are in this moment.
And beneath the surface, the dandelion is a powerful detoxifier, a plant of deep healing. It reminds us that even things we dismiss as insignificant can hold the exact medicine we need. It shows us that even in a season of new growth, the work of gentle clearing and release continues, making space for what is to come.
If you are feeling depleted today, please don’t pressure yourself to feel joyful and expansive. Instead, maybe you can try one of these gentle acts of self-commitment:
Notice One New Thing: On a walk or even just looking out your window, make it your mission to notice one single sign of new life. A tiny green shoot, a new flower, a different bird’s song. Acknowledge it. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. It’s a small act of witnessing renewal.
Take a "Sun Snack": Find a small patch of sunlight, whether it’s indoors or out. For just five minutes, close your eyes and let the warmth soak into your skin. Don't try to meditate or be productive. Just receive the energy of the sun, a tiny snack of light for your soul.
Set a Gentle Intention: Instead of a big goal, set a tiny, gentle intention for the week. It could be as simple as, “I intend to be a little kinder to myself,” or “I intend to notice one moment of beauty each day.”
Your journey is sacred, and every season of it is valid. The quiet of winter is just as important as the vibrancy of spring. Be gentle with yourself. Your own time to bloom is coming, and it will be beautiful.
